laptop no screen, ext. mon. = freq.outof rang

Specs: Windows Vista, intel duo core / 3gb ram
i bought a dell inspiron 1545 from a buddy who broke the screen, i plugged in an external monitor and ran the diagnostic tests on it, the hard drive turned out to be bad.. all other tests passed. I turned it off and when i turned it back on the monitor immediately displays: frequency out of range. I did not mess with any video settings at all, did not change resolution or refresh rate. Can anyone help with this. Also i have tried several other monitors with the same results. I cant even see any of the boot process or even the POST(power on self test) so i am completely in the dark here. I was wondering if clearing the CMOS could possibly help.. please help me out..

Try to start in safe mode. Then change screen properties.

If this is happening during the boot process, then safe mode won't help. It sounds like he dropped the laptop if both the monitor and hard drive are bad. Now it sounds like the motherboard and the video circuitry on it are going out. It may be more money to fix it than it's worth.
