Is it a new SATA HDD & you're attempting a fresh install of XP? or an existing one that had been working OK? Check the BIOS, is the drive being recognized?

Please do not double post on the same topic.

If you are attempting to install WinXP on a SATA hard drive then you either must see the BIOS to use an IDE compatibility mode or supply SATA drivers. Respond to the questions in #1 above.

It's possible that the hard drive has died and needs replacing. You can try testing it to be sure, but the test may not run if the testing software can't detect the drive. However, I am fairly certain it has failed judging by the symptoms and error messages you are getting.

Test the drive as a second drive on a working desktop. If the drive is not showing up on the second machine, especially in the BIOS, the drive is gone or the cable you are using is bad.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
