laptop crashes when playing games

January 18, 2010 at 03:24:04
Specs: Windows XP
My laptop keeps crashing when I play computer games that need bit more resources (but meet my laptop minimal & often recommended requirements). <- & it didn't crash before & with games that needed much more resources.

Problem is that it has started do do so only during past few months. I have had this laptop for 2 years now. Right now while typing this my mouse and everything freeze for 5sec & resumed as usual.

But when i start playing games or watch videos it freezes totally or restarts itself without any warning or message.

nVidia graphic card 8600 GTseries with 516mb memory.
CPU Name: Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T7250
RAM: 2Gb

What i have done:
1.Deleted my hard drive (because diagnostics shows some corrupt areas on mu HDD) using boot disc & cleared all bad sectors.

2.Installed Windows XP professional SP3 with all possible drivers (& updated them up-to-date including nVidia driver).

3.Logged hardware temperature with RMClock. Log files showed (after it crashed again) that CPU, GPU and all other temperatures were in their comfort temperature zone.

4.I also have cleaned vents and opened up my laptop & blown out all dust with compressor that is meant for blowing up tires - so i doubt there is any dust in my vents...

It seems to me its not software problem (original XP + all new drivers after total format). But i cant understand which hardware is malfunctioning and why (how could i fix it) ?

That's very good, u tried every possible solution. What is your cpu, gpu, system temp?Better check in bios. What is your laptop name? Did u test ram? If not download memtest v3.5 download .Iso file for windows and burn it and u need to boot from cd/dvd drive.

Thanks for reply

I did ram that test & it was 100% successful.
I unfortunately don't know my laptop name (i trashed all documents when warranty ended).

But i think problem might lie in GPU temperature (CPU's temp was normal ~50C during max performance & before crash).
I used several temperature diagnostic tools (GPU-Z & Notebook Hardware Control) - set them to log files and started playing games ~15min until laptop crashed:

*CPU 50..55C during gameplay & max performance.
*GPU rised from starting a game in 15min: from 65C to 80C <- this seems to be point when it crashes (did it 4 times straight at that temp).
(for some weird reason on two crashes it showed final temp 255C <=?? but this must be some overheated sensor error or something)

I uploaded this log file here (don think i can just copypast it here):

IF problem is in GPU temp. what are my options to fix it??
Can it be done via some software? Or only option to fix it is to buy new graphic card?

Thank you in advance :)
