Laptop cant read portable floppy drive.

March 1, 2011 at 16:44:53
Specs: Windows XP

2 laptops tried and both say "device installed properly and functioning properly" yet cannot read or write to floppy drive (Mitsubishi portable floppy). Light goes on. Floppy reading noise can be heard.

Have tried to open floppy files in Word. Have tried My Computer where it just keeps telling me to format the floppy disk.

Word and email files are on floppy disks and I just want to read them, and maybe transfer them to laptop hard drive.

I've seen this question posted on many sites, but have found no responses. Have tried all trouble shooters (Microsoft. Toshiba. Mitsubishi.)

Please help.

So does a normal desktop work with that drive?

I guess it could be that the floppy is somehow a usb 2.0 only ?? dunno if that is possible either.

Havent tried desktop comp yet, but yes, 2.0 usb. Have tried old Dell from 2004 and mod Toshiba 2010, but exact same process and prompts come up. On Fixya someone had same prob, but got no answer.

All hardware connections are fine and the Mitsubishi is brand new... just bought it from TigerDirect 6 months ago.

Got any ideas?

So you never tried it in 6 months?

If it doesn't work like the instructions say then return it. Be sure you don't need to add in any drivers or reboot or such.
