Laptop cant hold more than 1 ram stick or it shuts down!!!!!

Specs: Windows XP
My laptop used to hold 2 ram sticks filling the 2 available slots. 1 ram stick was replaced with another ram stick that had less memory. When I switched back the ram sticks the computer wasnt able to start up. I tried each stick on each slot and all worked, meaning the only time it wont work is when both are in(regardless of which stick is in which slot). Basically what happens is when it gets to the start up it just shuts down. Sometimes it gets to the desktop before it shuts down. One weird thing is I can get to the safe mode with no problem. and both sticks are stock sticks so it makes no sense why they wont work together. HELP

Some memory are not compatible with each other. There are a number of specs that need to be the came in order to be able to run together, not just the speed of the memory which you do not even mention. There is the Voltage and the timings that you need to pay attention to. If you put in one stick and then go to and run their test, it will show you what memory you can purchase that will run with what you have.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I prefer the old-fashioned way which is to check memory support from system or board manufacture website.
