The following assumes the multifunction unit was working fine previously. If you have just installed the software for this multifunction unit and haven't been able to get it to work yet, say so - that's a different situation.

If it says it's Offline that indicates Windows is not seeing it as connected properly, or the multifunction unit has an error state going on.
Look at the mutifunction unit to see if it's indicating and error - e.g. out of ink, a paper jam.
Try switching it off, switching it on, on the multifunction unit.

If it's connected via USB.........

USB devices may not work correctly when they're connected to certain USB ports e.g. ports in a hub or on the front of a desktop case. If you have a desktop computer, you may have an IRQ sharing problem you need to fix, or your power supply may be starting to fail.

Also - if you are using a USB extension cable, some of them have inadequate wiring and will not work properly with some USB devices.

I know several people including myself for one desktop case who cannot get a printer or multifunction unit to work properly when it's plugged into a front USB port on a desktop case.
