knocked the CD tray off the cog

December 21, 2010 at 08:50:56
Specs: Windows Vista
I managed to knock my open CD drive on my computer.
I don't think I hit it that hard, and I can tell that I've knocked the left side runner off the cog that usually opens and closes it. Its about 1-2 cm/ 1/2 Inch too far out.
How do I go about getting it back in and on the correct runner?

I don't think there is nay way to do what you did without breaking something. The drive will likely have to be replaced.

If this is a desktop computer, you will probably have to remove the drive, remove it's top cover and dis-assemble the tray related pieces, put it back together.

It is a desktop.
How tricky will that be? I'm find at slightly larger less delicate diy type stuff, but not so good on the computer front.

You can try what tubes said, but that happened to me once and I had to trash the drive.

If all else fails, desktop optical drives are not expensive, especially if you get a"bulk" one - merely a drive in an anti-static plastic bag - rather than one in a fancy cardboard box. If you live in a larger place, you can get "bulk" drives locally at places that build custom computer systems and sell computer pieces.

I've done this a couple of times. Yes I am a bloomin clutts. All I had to do was open up the drive and loosen the mechanism enough to gently wiggle the door shut.

Good luck.
