Keys Do Not Work At Log On Screen

Specs: Windows XP
Hello,
I am using a Dell Inspiron Mini 1020 running Windows XP Professional SP3. The keys on the keyboard do not work at the log on screen, so I cannot log in. When I try to enter safe mode, the arrow keys do not work, thus preventing me from entering safe mode. Also, I am able to use the on-screen keyboard to log in, and when I do, the keys all work inside Windows. What is the problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

just a question, is your mini still under warranty?
How long have you had this problem?

Thanks for the reply,
The computer is still under warranty but I wanted to fix it on my own if at all possible. The problem just started occurring and for no apparent reason i.e. no damage or spills, power outages, etc.

well from personal opinion I would suggest contacting the warranty people, that would be your best bet

Try using an external keyboard. If that doesn't help, it may be something's up with the motherboard.
