Just a blue screen comes up

Microsoft Windows xp professional w/sp2

Specs: Microsoft Windows xp, AMD Athlon/512MB
Today I'm going to go down to fix a computer for a small business owner. He has an issue with his computer where it got hit or kicked and afterwards it starts with just a blue screen. He says there are no characters at all. I asked what manufacture computer it is but he said it was a custom build computer...so the parts could come from different manufacturers. I'm supposed to come down to see it at about 5pm e.s.t. today; but, was wondering if anybody could give me more of a clue of what the problem could be before I see it.

What operating system is the PC running? Do you know if the PC is using a video card, or if it's using the video port on the motherboard? Does he see any text before it tries to log into Windows, and can he get into the BIOS? Are they able to boot into Safe Mode? I realize that I'm asking a lot of questions, but if all they're getting is a blank blue screen, that doesn't give us a whole lot to go on. (BTW, the only time I have ever seen anything like this on one of my PCs was when it got hit by a Blaster virus.)

If it got hit or kicked then check all internal plugs and sockets. Also clean RAM edge connectors with a pencil eraser because a vibration can move the RAM onto an oxidized area.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Got a hold of it and am working on it first hand now. For me I don't

even see a blue screen...just pitch black. I took out memmory stick so

it doesn't give long beeps for POST...now it has one short beep...still

nothing displays..no text displays at all...nothing. The hard drive was

taken out so it doesn't have a hard drive...so it has no OS. I don't

think it was a virus because he said that it got kicked and then stopped

working. I've tried 3 different display cards and still I see nothing!

Two are ATI video cards and one is a PCI card. I can't even get into

BIOS. Please reply...lost and wondering...

From the single bleep it seems as if you might have fixed the original blue screen problem.

If you never ever see anything on the screen at all it has to be hardware (sorry, that is probably a bit obvious).

If it has onboard video as well as a card, have you tried the monitor in the onboard socket? I was just wondering if it had somehow switched over.

Have you checked out the monitor itself?

Difficult to say but otherwise it could be a PSU or even a motherboard issue.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I've tried various video cards...2 ATI I believe one was definitely PCI and have tried the onboard video all don't work...the monitor works fine....also it looks like 2 types of keyboards don't light up at all when the computer is starting USB and PS2....actually it seems worse now because i tried to take the PSU connectors out and try it on another motherboard and it didn't start...then switched it back and then it didn't start...the motherboard is a MSI (model KM4M it looks like). Please advise!!!

Sounds like an intermittent connection but there's nothing more I can suggest over the wire. Keep watching in case someone else has some ideas.
