is there a way to add multiple graphics cards to a single?

Specs: Windows 8, 3.4ghz 18gb ram
okay, my computer has a single graphics card slot where i currently have a 660 Gtx in. but i was wondering if there was a way to add more than one without buying a newer computer. ive seen some rigs that have around 4 graphics cards plugged up externally, but i have no clue on where to even start to get such a set up. is there some kind of hard ware set up i need to purchase?

Is it because you want to be able to connect more monitors or because you want more graphics horsepower? I suspect the best solution would be to replace the motherboard with one that has several PCIe graphics slots & supports SLI. And you may need to upgrade the power supply as well.

its more for graphic horsepower. im fine with my monitors now as it is. by replacing my motherboard will i keep my data on my computer? my power supply is 500 at the moment. i may upgrade it to 750 soon enough if i do manage to find a way.
