If the video card is working for the monitor (still plugged in) with the standard windows driver then the video card is probably not dead.
The video card running on the standard windows VGA driver will be using the bare minimum of its built in capabilities so it will be drawing the absolute minimum current. This tells me that it is very likely that the PCIe connector(s) are not properly inserted or possibly the power supply is dying. For another clue, look in BIOS or the program HWMonitor (or similar) and note down the listed voltages and post them. If any voltages are more than 5% above or below the nominal voltages then the power supply is not up to the job or is going and needs to be replaced. Post also your power supply brand and model number as well as the currents listed on the label for each of the voltages.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

It's tough to offer any help when no specs are provided but my guess would also be the power supply.
