is my CDRW dead or what?

Dell / Dimension 2350
October 24, 2010 at 14:15:37
Specs: W XP Home, Celeron 2.00 GHz 256 RAM
I insert disc, little green light blinks for awhile, then nothing. Tried updating driver-said I had the best. Tried uninstalling in device mgr., reboot, says "New Hardware found, Atapi CD-RW 48x16", then "New Hardware found, CD ROM", no other message - but still doesn't recognized CD. Shows in My Computer, properties says "This device is working properly". Is there some other way to diagnose this device before I throw in the trash can?

Also, when I rt. click the cd-rw drive (D:) and select open or explore, I have a blank window. Yes, there's a disc in the drive.

That's an older PC so I would suggest investing in a new drive, they are real inexpensive anymore. In fact I would get a DVDRW, much better than a CDRW

I was just wondering if there was some other diagnostics, like via DOS or BIOS or Safe mode that might determine if the driver just went south or if the whole drive is toast?
