Solved Is it necessary to format a Color CD-R disk before using?

Specs: Windows 10
I bought some "color CD-R" disc from Best Buy and was told I need to format the disk before I can use the disc for storing data. Is that true? Can I just put my disc in the disk drive and copy what I want onto the disc?

Don't try to format CD-R disc, because after that, you are not able to put any data on that disc anymore.

I suggest to use a CDBurnerXP burning program, select the files you'd like to burn onto CD-R and burn your CD.

CDBurnerXP is a free burning program.

Very good advice. I decided on my own to see if I could simply copy the file onto my CD-R and it worked perfectly. I went to my file I wanted copied and clicked "copy" then opened the CD drive and pasted it to the CD. My personal computer did what it needed to do by itself and it copied the file onto my disc. I thought it said it formatted the disc but I do not think it formatted the disk, it just copied the file. I will confirm that by simply copying another file onto the disc if it works, I will let you all know.

I just added 4 photos to this CD and then closed the file and reopened it and "bingo" the original file and the 4 new photos are on this CD. I will say "case closed" when I take my CD to a friend and ask him if he can see open the CD (but I am 99% certain my friend will be able to see the files!)

Perhaps they meant "finalize" instead of format. Finalizing allows you to read the disc(s) on other machines after you've finished putting files on it (but that allows no more files to be burned to it). Don't always believe what a clerk or salesperson tells you---they quite possibly know very little about what they're talking about---they're just there to make a sale.
