Is it attached to an IDE channel? If so I might try a live linux cd, I think they support ide zip drives.

Also consider a "restore point" to a time when it worked. See help and support pages for how to.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

Did it ever see the drive?

How is the parallel port configured in cmos/bios setup. You'll need a bi-directional data transfer setting.

Does the parallel port show up OK in device manager?
.
It's not a SCSI drive is it? If so, you need a SCSI card with a Future-Domain type external connector. If it's a parallel port drive it must have a parallel cable. The SCSI and parallel cables look alike but aren't.

Now that's what I call a sticky situation

All is set up correctly. The computer does show the drive, but the error message says that the hardware is not connected. It is a parallel port. It does not show on device manager.

If you're satisfied the settings are OK then it may just be bad. They're cheap enough on ebay if you want to replace it. If so, consider getting one that's USB.
