Specs: Windows Vista
my unit is still working fine with no problems and i have been using it whenever my pc is open for the past 2 or 3 years. my question is i would like to upgrade the hard drive inside from a 250gb to a 500gb. i know that whats factory installed is a seagate barracuda 250gb and i want to replace it with a western digital caviar blue 500gb which i have a spare lying around. would that work? thanks.

If your computer came with a hard drive larger than 137GB then it is 48 bit LBA compliant. That means that any size hard drive sold will work.

Just be aware that there are two interface types IDE ATA & SATA. You must have the proper connections to use either.

If you have the room there is no reason to replace the hard drive. You can simply add a second hard drive and have even more space. Below is a link showing both types. Compare the connections to what you have available on the motherboard.

Below is an excellent place to buy hardware. Note that a bare drive means no screws or cables.

thanks OtheHill for your reply. i was referring to an IOmega 250gb External Hard drive which i would like to replace the existing factory installed Seagate 250gb Barracuda ata to a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500gb sata. i do realize i would probably have to install an ide to sata adapter for it to work. my question was can the IOmega External Hard Drive enclosure originally built for a 250gb hard drive handle a 500gb or more hard drive?

There would be no room inside the enclosure to install an adapter. Even if there were it may not work.

Why would you want to do this anyway?

What would happen to the 250GB if you pulled it out?

If you need additional storage and you have the 500GB already then just buy an enclosure for it. If you are interested I can provide a link to a good online store.
