Specs: XP Media Center Edition SP 2, 2.8GHz / 1GB
just added this external hd to my pc and it seems to be messing everything up. i keep getting a popup that my local drive is out of space - should have 18GB free space on the C drive but when i check during this popup, the entire C drive is used up - what is going on? The new hd is so slow I cannot bear to try and transfer video files to and from it. Takes forever and more often than not i get an error message that slow file transfer failed. Am I doing something wrong? Why is the new drive causing my system to thing the C drive is out of space every few hours? Why is it so slow that it is basically unusuable? I cannot transfer photo or video files directly from disk to the HD - does anyone have some suggestions? Thanks very much.

Remove the external drive the proper way and see if the problem persists. Should be no relation to the two.

It seemed like when AVAST was running yesterday the C drive appeard all used up temporarily but returned to normal with 18GB free when AVAST finished whatever it was doing.

I didn't remove external drive but turned it off and rebooted just now and C drive still shows 100% used - this is wrong - can't be all used. AVAST does not appear to be running at this time.

I'm confused. I am also wondering what I can do to get the external drive operating at normal speed.

Is your AV set to check file copying? That will slow copying.
The process may be creating temporary files as it copies.
thereby using space.

wizard - i think you have something because i noticed AVAST icon in tool tray is spinning a lot more since the new hd was added. If familiar with AVAST can you advise how I can check if it is the culprit? If so, I would like to disable that particular feature so that the new drive will operate at speed. please advise and thanks to all for comments.
