Iomega 1tb hard drive not recognized

Specs: Windows Vista
I have a 1 tb iomega desktop hdd. when i plug it in my laptop wont recognise it. the unit`s light just flickers like its trying to load. have tried going through control panel, computer management but doesnt seem to be found anywhere. the power supply isnt original but i dont think that would matter?
please help me before i shoot myself through frustration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It matters a great deal. Did you check these important values:

1). The voltage output of the power supply compared to the original Iomega one?

2) The centre-pin polarity compared to the original Iomega one?

3) The wattage load-rating compared to the original Iomega one?

Any mis-match of the above could damage the drive's internal circuitry.
(Especially too high a voltage or the wrong centre-pin polarity).
