Check that the cables are plugged in properly. Try new cables.

thanks for the reply
looked in the error log but cant really interpret the info
its all error codes etc..the only thing relating to the hd
is a ' warning ' that reads ' harddisk vol2 ( etc etc )writing to KEY (registry etc etc )
which is 30min after the reported prob in the cctv software

"which is 30min after the reported prob in the cctv software"
Ok, that doesn't sound like it was the problem.
Run chkdsk.

Sounds like the file system or cables.
chkdsk will sort out the file system.

I've had trouble with almost invisible oxide on SATA plugs and sockets. If it continues shut down pull out plugs (signal and power) and clean edge connectors with a small piece of pencil eraser. Pop them in and out a few times before finally pressing them home.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

i'm being urged to select a best answer
up to now the refitting and cleaning of the sata leads
seems to be working but it was working for 2 wks
before the posted issue

if its still ok after another 2wks i will mark cleaning and
refitting as best answer
regards

What OS in use? Win 10?
Do you have HDD "turn off disk after" value set?
"edit power plan" > "Change advanced power settings"
