Internal hard drive disappeared!

December 27, 2010 at 15:36:01
Specs: Windows XP Pro (SP3), 3.5 GB
One of my two internal hard drives (D:) disappeared! What could have happened?

FYI, the drive letters of my drives, except C:, changed.

Presume your second hard drive is a separate physical disk and not just a partition on your primary disk.
Option 1. The drive has failed.
Option 2 The IDE/SATA cable has failed or become dislodged
Option 3. The power cable to this disk has become dislodged
Option 4. The disk controller on the motherboard has failed.

check the cables. Boot up into BIOS. Is the disk detected ? Swithc cables/controllers and see if it can be detected. ( take usual precautions when working inside the case. eg antistatic strap, disconnect power when making any changes.

Thank you Kuwese and Richard59.

I turned the computer off and on and the drive appeared. Is it likely that the drive is going to fail in the near future?

Download a hard drive diagnostic program. Since the drive suddenly disappeared and re-appeared on reboot I would suspect an electrical problem. Check the power & data cables for looseness.
