If you're using the 32 bit version, it will only use 3.2 to 3.5 gigs of ram. Then subtract the amount of ram used by your video and that's probably correct. If you have on board video, you could consider getting an add on card which would free up the memory being used by the chipset on the motherboard.

Did it seem slow when you bought it? If is seemed fast before, then you may have some malware, spyware, virus or other issue. Simple enough to consider returning it to the OEM state and be sure to put on good protection suite. MS's security essentials or other programs are free. Paid apps are very good too.Norton or Mcaffee's and others are good.

IMO both Norton (Symantec) and McAfee products are not worth the money and are resource hogs. Security essentials is lean and free.
