Well right clicked on that drive D and my old files are not there? Do I need to click OPEN to find them.Do I need to format anything? The master drive from the computor I added the harddrive to The acer has 1 plug with yellow, blue, red, black wires and a smaller plug wire with sata 2 signal on it.The hard drive I am looking for all my files on that I took out of my other computor I just plugged 1 connector to it the one with the yellow, blue, red, black wires. There was not a spot to hook up the Sata wire to on my motherboard.Does that need to be hooked up?and how if I need to?At first I just hooked up the 1 hard drive only(the one with my files I need from my emachine) into this acer by it self. The files were there but for some reason I could not hook up to the internet with that hard drive? So I put the acer hard drive back in and then hooked up the hard drive from my emachine with all my old files to second spot in this acer.Could all of my files from the emachine drive D be gone now? Do I have to do something to make one of the hard drives master and the other one slave like I have read? When I go to disc management they both are on the same line it seems like.I am not a computor wiz here so please help if you can.I have medical records on that D drive I need if I can retrieve them. Thanks,Born

Eg. From emachine
c:/documents and settings/unknown user/desktop/medical.Txt
From acer system (remember now the drive is recognized as d not c)
d:/documents & settings/unknown user/desktop/medical.Txt
don't format the drive, the files are there.

You may need to take ownership of the files/ folders. Look at the Google links below to learn how.

darn! instead of c:\ i wrote c:/
did u have any partitions?
Better check in disk management.
Do u remember any location of your files (atleast one).
For example: c:\documents and settings\unknown user\desktop = desktop location.

Hello Again, I looked for hours trying to find files looked in the C:| I didnt do the partitions but read about them a bit.Like I ask before is there supposed to be one of those Sata plugs plugged into this second hard drive also?My mobo only has a spot for 2 and those are taken up by the main hard drive and cd burner. The Drive D shows 90% free space and that doesnt seem right?I had quite a bit of info on there. If anyone can think of something else I can do let me know please.Thanks.Born

You will not see any files that were part of a previous profile UNTIL you take ownership of the folder/ partition. It will NOT be the C partition when installed in a different computer.

This is by Windows design. It is no different than if there were multiple users on the original drive. Each has its own documents folder that can't be viewed/ changed by other users unless it had been shared.

You are getting confused because the original location was C. It will be a different drive letter/s than original because C is the OS partition in the host computer.

Just follow the instructions on taking ownership of the entire drive. THEN look for the files you want.

Hello Again,I took ownership of the hard drive (D:) that had all my info from the other computer but still none of my files are there? Why does it say still that the D hardrive has so much memory?Should I shut down everything again and plug the sata cable up to the drive I added and see if my old desktop is still there like it was when I plugged it in the first time? The computer did everything after I plugged both hard drives. It still sure does seem that hard drive I need all the info from is cleared??Thanks for your help!,Born
