Specs: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, 2 GHz / 2047 MB
Been around computers for a while and repaired quite a few but have a question i am not 100% sure of.

Can i use a laptop sata hdd in a desktop computer sata also of course.

I know one is 12v and the other is 5v but i think it might be ok but not 100% sure

this will not be in forever only for testing etc and one of the reasons i think it might work is that the sata docking stations take both drives same port.

but maybe i am just trying to convince myself that this is fine.
any opinions

Might be easier to get a usb to sata external adapter.

Thanks for the reply but its not really what I want to do.

What i wanted to do was basically hot swap (forget about drivers etc for now) a sata laptop drive with a desktop sata drive for testing purposes only.

I am not testing the laptop drive i am using it to test whether the original drive was the fault rather than removing it.

I know this is not 100% but it is quicker

"i am using it to test whether the original drive was the fault rather than removing it."
have you tried the manufactures utility for testing the drive?

Looks like i will have to stick with that or the way i was doing it by trying drives in other computers or in docking stations.

Would still have liked to know if it was possible though
thanks to all who answered

"I know one is 12v and the other is 5v but i think it might be ok but not 100% sure".

2.5" laptop SATA drives have the same connections as 3.5" SATA drives.
