imac wired keyboard volume keys not working

November 10, 2011 at 11:50:04
Specs: Macintosh OSX 10.5.8, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/1GB
A new wired keyboard for a 3-year old Mac shows the same functions for F1-12 as before but none of them works. My main concern is volume control, but now F10 blacks out the screen, F11 removes all windows, F12 gives calendar, time etc (like the top button on the mouse). I have tried System Preferences, Keyboard/Mouse suggestions and none helps. This is the second new keyboard from Apple, so the problem must be elsewhere. Can anyone help?

Hi Jeanh,

I do not know the mac, but bearing in mind there is 3 year difference between it and the new keyboard(s), could it be a driver issue?

Also, if *NOT* usb, disconnecting/reconnecting should only be done with the power *OFF*.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Try the Mac forum, they know the machines better.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Mike,
Maybe it is a driver problem, and if so, I wonder if someone familiar with Macs could suggest how to address it.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Jeanh,

on the back of both the old and new keyboards, I would expect to find the model (and maybe version) number.

If they are different, you will need them for checking if a new driver is needed.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Hi Mike,
Unfortunately, I don't have the old keyboard; the Apple store took it in exchange for the new one. But thanks for the suggestion.
