IE is using 75-97% of my cpu making it slow

Specs: Windows XP, 2.6ghz 1.5ram
IExplorer is using 75-97% of cpu, why? i have IE 8 and windows xp with service pack 3 and 1.5 gb of memory and yet at times my computer runs so slow that it takes forever just to type a single word or to open a single e-mail ...i have a 80gig hard drive that is 97% full and have not defraged for along time ...... i also run a mobile usb modem from clear as my ISP ....any ideas community

First thing you need to do is off load 15% of your files/programs on the hard drive. Get it below 85% full so you can run defrag. Empty the recycle bin.

Boot into safe mode with networking (F8) and see if the computer runs better.

in addition to that run a full system scan using an animalware or anti-virus program.(malware bytes)
