ide drive not detected at startup and keep re

Specs: Windows xp, amd athlon
Hi.I just change the hdd from 120 gig to 40 G they are same hdds and xp sp3 on them.Did not work and I put back everything how it was and windows logo come up then restart again and again.Bios see it and list it but on start up it says drive not detected 0,1,2,3 non of them.Error message:hardware change.But I check everything 10 times I did put back how it was.Please help me!Thank you.Monika Prior

You didn't provide enough info. Make sure the master/slave jumpers are configured correctly on ALL your IDE devices.
