IBM Thinkpad T40? screen going black

May 7, 2011 at 19:34:14
Specs: Windows XP, 2gb Ram
I got this computer from a friend while trying to figure out what is wrong with my main laptop(will be posting about that later)
It worked fine up until, I want to say three or four days ago. While playing a java game I had downloaded (Frets of Fire or such) the screen went black, sound continued for awhile before dieing off. I shut the notebook down, and after some huffing and puffing, several choice words, and about ten minutes later it came back up. At times it has run for hours straight since this happened. The area where I'm pretty sure the vid card is does not seem to be getting hot. Occasionally I can hear the fan fight a little harder but that is more recent than the blackouts. I have an external fan(plugged into my ps2's usb to make sure it stays running etc etc). I don't open and close the screen all to often if at all so there shouldn't be that much wear and tear on those wires that I can imagine. I can no longer run games like WCIII for more then a minute or such before blacking out, least as of tonight I can't. Personally thinking the graphic card is dieing out but would like other opinions.

If it helps, sometimes when it goes black I'll be working in a word doc. I ctrl+s type in a title, and hit enter but the document is not saved when I reboot(to my dismay) so it doesn't just seem to be a dead screen.

Sounds like a heat problem. Check the airflow. Clean out the fan. Lots of dust seems to collect around the heat transfer piping. And the fan wears out. CPU may be overheating.
Lots of possibilites including a loose connection or bad keyboard.
