Lots of things....

If that wasn't helpful then maybe you should give us more details so we actually can help.
What problems have you had recently?
Are you just hearing the fan or are you sure it is the hard drive?
Is there anything on the monitor at all? Curser? Flicker?
Is there any beeps or other sounds?
Are there any lights around or above the keyboard?
Does it get to Windows and then blanks or is there nothing?
Can you get anything by tapping the keys for access to Alternate boot or BIOS set up when you try to start up (see manual)?
Have you tried reseating your memory?
Do you know if your battery and charger are good?
........

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

With a laptop, if it is a problem with the video or motherboard, that is very possible.
If you do not need it portable, consider a desktop, you will get more computer for less money and it will be easier to repair and upgrade.

thank you for your help. It was exactly my thoughts. It was a buddy of mines and I tried talking him out of it before he bought it.
