Specs: Windows XP
I want to take old hard rive I have longtime replaced and want to convert it to an external usb hard drive I can use on my x-box

You need an external case for it; and the type of connector this olde drive uses is the key item...

What kind of drive is is; likely as it's olde it's EIDE - but it "might" be SATA....?

You can buy caddys from many places including Amazon which hold the drive and give USB connectivity. You just need to make sure you choose the correct connection type, IDE or SATA. Do a search on Google for 'IDE Caddy' or 'SATA caddy'.

for such queries you should always advise the Make and full Model number of the device concerned.

Also the device type may be important (e.g Laptop, Netbook, Tablet)
