I tried to connect my windows 98 hard drive t

May 2, 2011 at 14:36:40
Specs: Windows XP
I have two PC's, XP and 98. I took HD out of 98 box, Removed my secondary drive from my XP box, Placed the 98 disk in the XP box and powered up.

It recognized the disk but asked to format it when I double clicked on it.

I took it out and placed the secondary back in the XP machine and it told me the same thing on the secondary that was working fine???

OS on xp box is on a SATA drive

I placed the 98 disk back in the 98 machine and it said cannot find OS.

Any Ideas on why this happened or how to fix it?

Thank You

The Windows 98 disk format probablly got corrupted when Windows XP didn't recognize the FAT 32 format. If you run FDISK and view the disk it will probablly show it as a NON-DOS partition. A Partition Manager software program might allow you to correct this problem without losing the data. Using FDISK to correct the problem means you probablly have to format the disk and reinstall Windows 98.
As for the secondary Windows XP disk go to Administrator Tools in the conrol panel and click on Computer Managment ; Storage ; Disk Managememnt. Check to see if the disk is recognized as NTFS format. If not refresh the screen on the actions menu.
If you want to run dual operating systems on Windows XP view help to show exactly what you have do.

My secondary disk is only listed as healthy, no file system? It could have been Fat 32 also I am not positive but it was fine prior to this.

I am taking the disk home to an older PC that I can install win 98 se on to. I will however run FDISk, I had planned on that as I feel that maybe the partition was simply made inactive.

I will let you know.

Thank you
