Specs: Windows Vista
I cannot access my SD (Sandisk 1 GB) memory card on my computer. I keep getting the I/O error message. I also have a Sony Memory Stick PRO (256mb) that won't work; same message; however when I used the microsoft patch I lost the Sony Memory stick option in "My Computer". What is the deal?

"I keep getting the I/O error message."

What's the exact message?

"when I used the microsoft patch I lost the Sony Memory stick option in "My Computer""

Which Microsoft patch ? You don't need to install any patch if you could read the card before without it.

Take a look on the Sony site in the software downloads for your specific model - there may be something there for the Sony Memory Stick support.

Make sure you're inserting the card all the way, the right side up.

Were you able to read the same card before in the same reader slot ?
If no....
- some types of cards can't be read by some readers.

If yes....
- you may have damaged the data, most likely because you didn't use Safely Remove Hardware and STOP accessing the card before you unplugged it while Windows was running. That can usually be fixed by using a program to repair the damage. See the Troubleshooting USB device problems info, regarding not being able to access data you could access previously, next.

If the memory card reader is not built into the laptop....
