I need to boot from my external HD

October 11, 2010 at 09:20:28
Specs: Windows XP, 2.0/ 1.5 gigs of ramof ram
I have a compaq CQ62 laptop running Windows 7. My desktop which was running Windows XP and the power supply stop working. I purchased an external HD case so that I could use my HD from the desktop as a USB-external HD. I can read the files on the HD if I boot from the laptop's HD, but if I try to make the external HD the primary boot drive it fails to boot.

Also it is difficult to get windows to boot from a usb device.

You may be able to convert that drive to a virtual image or even run it as a virtual hard drive with a Virtual Machine. It may be easier than trying to get all the work needed to get it to boot via usb.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

I do have the XP emulater(maybe the wrong name) installed on my pc. I do not know how to do convert the drive to a virtual drive. The reason I want to boot from the other drive is because I can't access everything. My favorites from the firefox installed on the XP drive can't be accessed. Certain programs don't work at all. I am assuming it is because the windows 7 registry has not been modified by the XP programs so it won't run them.
