Use nt or 9x.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

I believe that has the nvidia RIVA TNT2 ultra chipset. According to nvidia this download supports that chipset:

The nvidia drivers were specifically for 2000 and XP so there shouldn't have been an OS problem. Are you sure that was the reason they wouldn't install? You may need to uninstall any previous installation attempts.

I think there were a few versions of the viper 770. The drivers I linked to were for just 'viper 770', although nividia driver downloads are usually a one-size-fits-all so the same download may cover all versions.

What video adapter currently shows in device manager?

Under " display adapters" it says "ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series" if that is what you want ?

I don't get it. The only chipset I find for that card is the nvidia but ATI isn't nvidia. Jefro's link indicates ATI but you said it doesn't work. I did find some "ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series" viper cards but none that were called 770.

Post back some details. Is this a new card for your system that's replacing an older card? If not, was it working before? Did you have another video card installed or maybe on-board video. Is there other identifying info on the card?

Ok, here's the deal.
1. this is a good running 5 year old Gateway with a 3.4 processor
2. I bought some games that the video card won't handle
3. I bought this Viper 770 because all I have is an AGP slot for the video card
4. the card that I am trying to replace is the ATI Radon 4600
5. When I put in the 770 the computer boots but the monitor is blank, nothing...
6. So, that is where I am, with what I think is a decent but old card and a blank screen.
7. If I left any info out that you need, please ask
Thanks for all your help

When you have the viper installed, does anything ever show on the screen? If so, go into cmos/bios setup to see if you need to change the primary video adapter to agp. If nothing shows on the screen, how did you attempt the driver install you mentioned in # 3?

When using the viper, if you get a posting screen or gateway logo when you first boot up, try going into safe mode with the F8 boot menu. If you get to safe mode uninstall the ATI drivers. Then reboot to normal mode and see if it picks up the card.

There are some compatibility issues with AGP cards. Not all AGP cards work in all AGP slots. This is a download for the manual:

Check the card's specs and see if it's compatible with your agp slot.

Since you apparently haven't booted into windows using the viper it's possible XP will have native support for the card and will install its own drivers--if you get windows to load with the card.

I booted with my old card and got into the bios and my primary display is set for AGP.

I tried to boot into safe mode with the 770 but I get nothing, just a blank screen.

I read the manual ( thank you for that ) and changed the jumper as it suggested but that did not do anything.

Know anybody that could use a V550 or a V770 ? Both cheap, just pay for shipping !

Thank you for all the help but I believe we have reached the end of the road.
Thank you

As stupid as that sounds, that's right, I had hopes that it would be a better graphics card, apparently not .

Do you want them ?

I don't need them. You may be able to get something for them on ebay. But prices for computer hardware are falling as fast as home values in an Obama economic 'recovery'.

Amen to that !
Let's hope we can get a decent candidate and move this country forward and not into another European socialist country .

Thank you for all your help. It was a grand experiment that went horribly wrong.

You're welcome. Just check for compatibility on any prospective future video card.
