Solved I have taken 'plates' out of dead HDD to retrieve data

July 28, 2013 at 14:24:38
Specs: Windows 7
I took the hard drive apart (tried everything to get it to work,it wouldn't budge!) so I took it apart and have them stored in clean bags (yes the kind for computer parts, this isn't my first rodeo!!) but I have run out of ideas on how to retrieve data from them--short of sending them in to a service. I really don't think its worth that much money to get data from it! but any geniuses out there come up with a creative way that works I would like to hear it!??

The US geological Survey Team detected a minor tremor world wide coinciding with this post and has been traced to three billion people shaking their heads in wonder at the same time.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

By removing the plates, normally called platters, from the hard disk you have as good as rendered them useless.

If you really wanted the data from the disk you should have sent the intact disk away. If it was necessary to open the disk and remove the platters it would have been done in a "clean room", environment free of even the tiniest bit of contamination.

By exposing the platters to a normal environment you have made any data recovery that much hard, probably impossible. There is no way that you a user can recover the that now that you have removed the platters from the case.

They platters would need to be remounted and balanced to a high degree of accuracy with tools that you would only find in a manufacturing facility.

"I took it apart and have them stored in clean bags (yes the kind for computer parts, this isn't my first rodeo!!)

Those are static proof bags and have nothing to do with being clean, nor are the platters of a hard drive susceptible to static. Apparently, this is your first rodeo.

You are screwed.

Your hdd and data are sharing the boat with you.

"Put it all back together and hope for a miracle"

And good luck remembering which order the platters went in and which side faces up.

As soon as you broke the seal on the inside of the drive (where the platters are), it was your last rodeo on that drive.

You could go to the chinese embassy and tell them the platters have US military secrets on them. I'll bet they could get the data off them.

chrysopeia, by removing the platters you just "killed" your only remaining chance of getting the data off them.

Although the OP never responded, he (or she) apparently has a sense of humor & picked what is undeniably the best answer. Nice job Fingers!

Actually, I picked Finger's post as the best answer. Clearly there really wouldn't be a best answer for this post but Finger's answer actually did make me LOL.
