A single beep is probably OK. Are you sure the cmos battery is good? If 'yes' then likely it's a hardware problem, probably the power supply. Oops my battery has to be recharged now.

What symptoms prompted you to replace the battery?

Regarding number of beeps: I have an old laptop running
Windows 98SE which beeps once for a normal start plus
two more times if a PCMCIA card is in the PCMCIA slot.
Then the Windows startup sound plays.

You are "certain" that you installed the battery correctly - as per Johnw's suggestion (writing on the top- as you look at the battery)?

Also are you certain it's actually the correct one and OK in itself? Not unknown for new batteries to be flat or otherwise faulty on arrival; but not that common either (olde stock sold as new/current). Usually the packaging will have a best by date or similar on it?

@ Dave in #3...

I didn't realise you were battery powered. I thought pedal power at least (as per Soapbox Derby...); maybe even solar powered...

Have a fully and permanently charged 2020 and beyond (and similarly to the rest of the chap/chapess here too).

Well in winter I certainly feel like my batteries need recharging! Sign me 'waiting for spring'.
