I like the thought of the new 3rd generation i5's since they are going to be using less energy than earlier processors so your battery life (run time) will be longer for the same weight in battery (or lighter for the same run time).
Many resellers may not have too many models with these processors yet so consider going to HP and configuring one since on many mid range models you can upgrade the processor for just a little bit more. This is what I am considering for my daughter that just graduated from High School and needs one for college soon. I have done a test configuration for one of their GT6 series that came out to around $650.00 that should keep her for quite a while (that's about half what her sister's cost 4 years ago).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

My kid is entering her 4th yr of college & I bought her an HP g6-1b60us last fall for under $400. It has the AMD A4 Llano, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD. The 1st thing I did was create the Recovery discs, then I wiped out the recovery partition & HP_tools partition. I then repartitioned the drive so that there were only 2 partitions - one for Windows, one for storage. I wiped out all the useless HP software, got rid of Norton & the trial version of MS Office then installed MS Security Essentials & the full version of MS Office 2010. I tweaked Win7 for best performance & upgraded the RAM to 8GB. We've had absolutely no problems with it & she uses it constantly.
