Specs: Windows XP
my hubby died recently and i cant break the password on his wd external hard drive there are lots of pics he touched up that i would love to retrieve any ideas how to get past the password

It all depends on what exactly was done to the drive.

If the drive was encrypted there is very little chance of recovering the files.

It may be that you just need to take ownership of the files

Let us know exactly how you are trying to access the files and exactly what error messages you are getting on someone might be able to help.

he passworded it and i have no idea of the password and i have looked on line a bit but so far nothing to help

Do you know how he passworded it? Can you access his desktop and look for truectypt or other encryption?

Microsoft uses a type of encryption if you own XP Professional version Take care not to delete any user accounts. The user account is needed to un-encrypt it. We may be able to get the user password from Windows by running a special cd.


If he used any sort of good encryption then I doubt you would be able to crack it..

i still have one of his pc,s but not his number 1 pc i will hook it up to the pc i have here and see if i have any joy, all i no is he used my youngest son as the hint
