Describe the problem with the primary screen. If you can't configure an external display the graphics chip on the motherboard may be bad.

Are you sure Fn+F4 is the correct keystroke?

Is the external monitor turned on?

If you are able to see something on the screen when you start the laptop then the graphics chip may be OK.

Verify the keyboard is responding by trying other keystrokes at start up.

Do you have only one port to connect the external monitor?

Is the monitor plugged in and turned on? You should see an orange indicator light.

Try booting into the BIOS (setup) screens and see what happens then.

"won't let me move over from main". What does that mean? Do you know how to maneuver in those screens using the keyboard?

How about Page UP/Dn? Also may need to hit enter to highlight a selection before trying to change it.
