HP laptop keeps shutting down when trying to install XP

Specs: XP
I formatted the hard drive because it was almost full and very slow. After I formatted, I attempted to reinstall xp. When setup starts, all is good but after a short time (and before the OS can install) the computer just shuts off. I tried a new hard drive but the same thing happens. If I boot with a utility program, the computer stays on but when trying to reinstall OS it keeps shutting off. What could cause this to happen?

Please post the model/model number of your laptop. Does it have a SATA HDD? If it does, do you know how to install XP to SATA?

It is a Intel Centrind Duo, made my HP and the model is HP Compaq nc6400, processor speed is 1833 MHz, memory is 2048 MB, it is a SATA and I have installed XP onto the hard drive in the past so I don't know if I knew how to do it or if it was an accident that it worked before. The OS starts to install but then computer powers off. Sometimes it happens soon after setup begins and sometimes it allows the process to go for awhile before it powers off. Also, as long as I am in the bios the computer stays on.
