320GB is the advertised capacity, the true capacity is 298GB. Apparently something is using approx 15GB of space. Was the drive ever used before? Is there one single partition or more than one? Did you look in Disk Management to see what is listed?

A hard drive is a hard drive. It's got nothing to do with HP or Gateway. Everything you need to do can be done thru Disk Management. Just right click, you'll figure it out.

Generally you just delete the existing partitions, create a new partition out of the available space and format it. Disk manager should be able to handle this. The only partition it will not delete is your active system partition (C Drive). About the only reason I can think of that it cannot use nearly all is if there is a segment problem. Know that the drive does use a small amount of space to keep track of where each file is, but it is not really that large a space.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

You can't merge unallocated space. It has to be formatted 1st. Everything you needed to do could have been done using Disk Management. As I stated in my other response, "Just right click, you'll figure it out". Did you try right clicking on the unallocated space? If you had, I think you would have seen what was required.
