hp compaq d330ut, how much ddr memory can be

Specs: Windows XP
I have 4 available slots for ram upgrade. just need to know how much pc32oo memory will be isable if i insert 4 x 1gig modules as i dont want to waste money of redundant ram that either windows or motherboard ignore.

XP 32-bit has a virtual address space (VAS) of 4GB, but a portion of that 4GB is needed to map the memory addresses of other devices. That means the full 4GB will never be recognized by the OS. The amount is different for every system, depending on the hardware configuration. I recommend going with 3GB, 2 x 1GB + 2 x 512MB.

Cheers surprisingly I wasnt surprised by the answer and kinda understood it. Just as a general inquiry to further the question. why the two half gig ones rather than a single 1 gig and free slot.

Am I right in assuming if I used any pc2700 chips then the entirity would run at the lesser mghz speed too.
