Generally the first step is to purchase a can of compressed air from a computer or office supply store and blow the dust out of all of the vents and even some of the easily openable ports.
The second thing to do is to make sure that you have control over all programs that might be running in the background. Check Task Manager to see if anything it using a lot of CPU and/or memory when everything is closed and it is at idle. Investigate these and see if they can be set not to open with Windows.
If the dust problem is severe it may require opening the laptop and blowing it out from the inside. Only you can tell if it is something you are comfortable doing or need professional help with it. HP does have downloadable instructions for replacing every internal component so instructions for opening it far enough is available if you are comfortable doing it.
Running a program like HWMonitor can tell you which components are running hot and what it takes to get it very hot and how quickly can be had with some experimentation.
Remember use a laptop only on hard surfaces so you do not block any vent holes with soft materials.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
