Normally there is an option (somewhere in the settings) to enable your phone to act as a personal hotspot. Then you locate it via the computer's wifi, and seek to logon to it - using the password which will be a default one within the hotspot settings in the phone (that password can be changed you if you wish).

You don't use a usb cable as best I know..

Be aware that you will need an active data service/allowance for your phone, besides your normal phone service; and using the phone as a modem means when you browse/go online, you will be using your phone's data allowance. It soon gets used up...

What you are attempting with the USB cord is called 'Tethering'. There should be a setting there on the phone for activating it or there should be instructions on your phone service' web site on how to do this. I have not done this myself so i cannot go into more details AND the above note that you may use up your allotted data on your phone plan very quickly applies here as well unless you have unlimited data. Even if you have unlimited data you may find that they reduce the speed that the data flows to you if you continue to use a lot of data, especially at busy times of the day.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
