"take the HDD/SSD & place it in the new PC"

No guarantee that will work. Why not just copy your files to a USB jumpdrive or CD/DVD & transfer them from computer A to computer B?

RE #2 but if it did work, it would only take 2min. Worth the shot imo

Could you tell me exactly what file names to copy? Contact list, pictures, documents, bookmarks.
I'm almost a rookie and glad for any and all help.

Most personal files will be in Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music folders and Libraries (if used) but Bookmarks/Favorites and Contact Lists (if using an email client program) will need to be exported and then imported to the new system (list browser and client program for details). Make a list of programs/apps that you may want to reinstall to the new machine.
