I think the only way would be to get this information from the original owner. The numbers on the laptop have no relationship to where it was sold.

more and more what? not exactly an answer to my question, which is..... is there anyway to find out where a laptop was purchased without contacting the original owner? There are MANY numbers put on the bottom of laptops so i thought that maybe one of them might prove useful for me. If you know the answer to my question please share. that would be more and more useful to me

What OtheHill was referring to was more an more laptops of dubious provenance.

Dell could work out where the laptop was sold from the serial number but that would take some research by them, whereas the owner should be able to find out that information very quickly. There is a service tag no on the laptop but that will be tied to the original owner.

You have no choice but to contact the original owner. Dell are not going to provide a warranty if there is the slightest suspicion that the current owner is not the legitimate one. Do you have a receipt, a bill of sale or something to prove that you are the legitimate owner of the laptop.

no i bought it on craigslist. what's really weird about it to me is that i used the service tag to get tech support a couple of months ago and the service they provided me was covered because of the warranty, yet now they want to say i need all this extra info.........but if dell can find the information from the serial number is there anyway i could do the same?

The first time the laptop may not have been reported stolen. Perhaps it has been since that time.

Why can't you contact the seller?

Did you pay way below market value?

Was the laptop complete or did you have to install a hard drive?

Only if you have access to Dell's sales records.
