Solved How to Safely Remove External USB HDD from MS Surface Pro

Specs: Windows Vista
How do I 'safely remove' an external hard drive from my MS Surface Pro? In Windows Vista I right click on the drive and then click 'safe to remove'. can't find this facility on Windows 8.

Look for the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the notification tray in Windows 8.

Tap on the "Desktop" tile in the Start Screen, and the little icons that are right next to the clock in the lower right-hand corner are the notifications in the notification tray. It may be hidden from the tray, in which case you need to click the little arrow to the left of all of the icons. You can see the icon that you're looking for in this picture:
