Might not be necessary to go that drastic course of action...

Post back with details of your Packard Bell; model and more details on what is actually happening - or happened recently?

Then if really need to reset etc... proper advise can be given...

And in the meantime... also download and run - in this order:

junkware removal tool: (The download link is to the author's site - quite/very safe).

spywareblaster: (this was recently mentioned here at CN - after a longish absence; I wasn't aware it is still around and OK with win-7 either).

And if you can... also download and run the Kaspersky rescue disk utility. This is an ISO - (freebie) which you save to your HD; then burn to a dvd. Boot up with that dvd.

This is a Linux based disk. It will load itself into RAM only; go on-line to update itself; then scan your system fully (if opt to) for anything nasty it can find and delete it... There are more than a few pests out there than can hide within Windows from many anti-virus utilities; and booting via a Linux derived disk allows them to be found...

All of the above are "free"; safe to run; regularly suggested here by the cognoscenti in pest control...

Also before you do anything like a factory reset/restore... Be aware that: a factory reset/restore wipes everything from the drive in the process; which means all your personal files go...

So - first copy all your personal files (stuff you wouldn't wish to lose) off the system completely; typically to DVD at least. Ideally - if possible - to another external HD too. Verify/check the copies are truly accessible too on another working system as well as the one that made them.
