how to reformat a hard drive on a dell when i

Specs: Windows xp
when i turn on a dell latitude d600 it says that i need a password for the hard drive and i don't have it, my 3 year old was playing with this computer and the next time i booted up this popped up.some one said i would have to reformat the hard drive, but how can i do that?

If the hard drive has an unknown password you will have to contact DELL and be prepared to prove ownership.

thanks, i have contacted del but the lapto was given to me to fix last year and the guy has never paid me for it or contacted me again so i have no idea who the original owner was, all i know is that he told me he bought it from a friend

Sounds awfully fishy. Without some sort of proof of ownership, you're not going to get the HDD unlocked by Dell. Formating probably isn't going to help, in fact, you probably can't format it due to the lockout. You may be able to find a service that will unlock it for you, but it won't be cheap.
