Solved How to get HDMI to work again

March 2, 2017 at 21:10:37
Specs: Windows 10, I7-6700 3.4GHz / 16GB
I installed a new GTX 980 card. My previous card did not have a HDMI, so my monitor and TV were both just in the usual HDMIs. The 980 was competing with my motherboard card so I disabled it. Now my HDMI that my TV was plugged into is not working. Is there a way to I have my HDMIs that are not on my video card to work again? Sorry for using basic words and maybe not being descriptive enough? I am VERY new to computers as my ex did all the hardware issues.

"My previous card did not have a HDMI, so my monitor and TV were both just in the usual HDMIs" ??
How were the TV & monitor connected to your PC??

"The 980 was competing with my motherboard card so I disabled it."
What did you disable? The new GTX980 or the GPU on the motherboard?

There are four different types of monitor connections - VGA, DVI, HDMI & DisplayPort. The 1st two carry a video signal only. HDMI & DisplayPort carry the video signal plus audio. Here's what the connectors look like:

Who installed the GTX 980? It's a power hungry gaming card that requires a minimum 500W power supply & depending on the card, requires a 6-pin or 8-pin (sometimes 2) additional power connections. When the card is installed, the motherboard graphics should be disabled automatically. The monitor or HDTV should be connected to the video card HDMI port, not the motherboard port. You will also have to choose the correct HDMI port using the HDTV remote to get the computer graphics to display. Make sure your have the latest graphics drivers installed & you may have to adjust the HDMI audio settings on the computer to get sound to the TV.

Note also that you may have only one HDMI port on the GTX980 but if so then you may have one or two Display ports, there are Display port to HDMI adapters available:

that will allow you to connect additional HDMI devices.
When you purchased the GTX980 card you should have noted that they all do not come with the same outputs and some may have had two or three HDMI ports which would have served you better.
If you want two or more devices to show the exact same video/audio then you can use an HDMI splitter:

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

No one told me when getting a new card I would only be able to use the HDMI on the video card, otherwise I would have searched more. Well... *newbie* like a said. I do have and adapter from HDMI I used on my children's computer awhile back so I can use that. Completely forgot about that thank you.

I don't know if you'll check back or not, but I'm curious why you bought a card in the 1st place & why such an expensive card. Are you a gamer?
