Specs: Windows 7
When I turn on my Dell Inspiron M5030 Laptop a shrill loud sound comes from the machine. What is wrong?

Most likely an issue with one of the fans.

1. Check to make sure there is nothing obstructing the fans, such as a wire or something.

2. Clean the fan out with compressed air.

3. If neither of these work, the fan has probably gone bad, in which case you'd have to buy a replacement.

Your other posting on the problem says it's preventing you from booting to safe mode. Does that mean it boots to normal mode or doesn't boot to windows at all? What, if anything, shows on the screen?

Is it possible the sound is beep(s), which are generated by the bios when it senses a major hardware problem? If so, how many beeps?
