How to fix my power switch on my Gateway W730-K8X laptop

Specs: Windows 7
My power button is mashed in and will not let me turn on my computer. I was going to take it apart and see if I could clean or replace it. I have removed 4 screws and it still is not coming out. Wanted to know the best way to go about.

How did it get mashed in? Is it just dirty and sticky or did something get dropped on it? What happened?

Don't have a clue. It is there but will not work. I used a safety pin and gently pried the power button up and it seems fine. Didn't look dirty. The connector (which looks like a little mother board part) is white so I used a pencil and tried to push it in. It didn't do anything.

The computer shows the on light when plugged in, it just won't turn on with the power button. I looked at the button when I took it off and it looked in good condition. I put it back on.

I removed about 4 or 5 screws from the back of the laptop to see if I could gently pry the little plastic plate off. I thought if I could get it off I could buy a replacement part. I priced them and they are about 30 to 60 dollars. I couldn't ever get it to release and didn't want to break it so put the screws back in.

The power button felt like it sorta clicked when I would turn it on but now it doesn't feel like it is connecting at all.

If the button was stuck in it may have done some damage. Hopefully not though. Try removing the battery and the AC power. Then depress the power button a few times. Now replace the battery and AC connection and try to start it up.

It didn't work. I don't know maybe the screen LED is not working. It would flicker before. It may not be working. However if the power button powered it on I would hear a noise. I am not hearing anything. The blue battery light is on and the amber light close to where you open the lid is on. Nothing else. Thanks for your suggestion.

There isn't much more you can do with a laptop except take it in for evaluation and/or repair. If the laptop is still under warranty then contact an authorized repair facility.
